Q: How can I establish myself as a publisher with Carbonated Comics?
A: Once you create a Carbonated Comics user account, simply fill out the Publisher Application. From there you can fill out some very basic information, and search to see if your publisher is already registered. If it is not, simply click on the New Publisher Application link and fill out the application. That’s all it takes. Once we have confirmed your information, you will be a registered publisher.
Q: What format do my comic books need to be for publication?
A: Right now we are accepting comic book pages in .PNG and .JPG format. When you build and submit your comic through the publisher portal, each image needs to be in .PNG or .JPG format.
Q: What graphic editing software should I use?
A: If your graphic editing software supports .PNG or .JPG files, then you're all set! There are plenty of graphic editors out there such as Photoshop CS, GIMP, and Paint Shop Pro. As long as your editor supports .PNG or .JPG, you should be OK.
Q: All I have is paper copies of my work, how can I get them in a digital format?
A: When only paper copies of your work exist, they will need to be scanned and saved in digital format. We realize that this can be a very time consuming and labor intensive exercise, so Carbonated Comics is always willing to assist with this process. Check out our FREE Digitizing Services for more information.
Q: All my comics are in a legacy format. Can you help me convert them to CCX files?
A: Yes. If you have any difficulties converting your legacy materials into .PNG or .JPG files, please contact us at support@carbonatedcomics.com. Also, be sure to check out our FREE Digitizing Services where we can digitize your comic for you.
Q: Can you sell my fan fiction/crossover comics?
A: Unfortunately we cannot distribute any material that in any way infringes on someone else’s intellectual property. If you do not own the source material, we cannot distribute it through Carbonated Comics.
Q: Can my work be distributed in your CCX format without DRM?
A: The DRM and encryption on the CCX file are optional. The option to select which mode of encryption you want to use on your files will be available in the near future. You can distribute your content in an open format and still take advantage of the advanced features available in the CCX format. If you would like to distribute immediately without DRM or encryption, you may also select to distribute your comics as CBZ files. CBZ files are a standard open format for digital comic books.
Q: I am an artist/writer/etc. and don’t have a publisher. Can you help?
A: While Carbonated Comics is primarily a distribution entity for digital media, we are always willing to help. We are currently working on the social networking aspect of our site that, when completed, will help connect creators and publishers. We also have established relationships with several publishers who are currently accepting material. Finally, just by having an account at Carbonated Comics, you as an artist, writer, or other talented content creator can list yourself as "Looking for Work" on the My Account page. By listing yourself as "looking for work," publishers can contact you about potential work they might have available for you.
Q: Who owns my work/intellectual property once it is published through Carbonated Comics?
A: You, as a publisher or content creator, will always maintain full ownership of your content. Carbonated Comics makes no claims, written or implied, regarding ownership of content. Carbonated Comics is in business to give you a simple and secure means to distribute your content and not to assume ownership of your intellectual property.
Q: Do you require exclusivity? Can I still have my comics distributed through other sources?
A: Carbonated Comics does not require exclusivity in distribution. You may distribute your content in any way that you see fit.
Q: I’m under 18. Can I publish or distribute my work through Carbonated Comics?
A: In order to distribute material through Carbonated Comics, we require all content owners to sign a simple contract. You must be over 18 to enter into a legal contract, so we would require a parent, guardian or some other legal entity to sign the distribution contract on your behalf.
Q: I only have one comic book. Will you distribute it for me?
A: Absolutely.
Q: Can you sell my adult oriented (XXX) comics?
A: At this time Carbonated Comics cannot distribute materials of a pornographic nature.
Q: I want to add music to my comic. Where can I get the music? Can I just use any music?
A: In order to use music or any other background soundtrack, you must have the legal rights to do so. Any audio track attached to a comic book must be properly documented. We cannot distribute any audio without the proper documentation. For more information, please contact us at support@carbonatedcomics.com. If you wish to use audio materials, you have 3 basic options.
License commercial music. Any commercial music track that you wish to use must be properly licensed. Below are three organizations that can assist you with obtaining a commercial license for song distribution:
Q: What are OGG files?
A: OGG files (Ogg Vorbis) are an open format for sound files. The compression algorithm for OGG is similar to MP3, but is not proprietary. Carbonated Comics uses OGG files to avoid any issues with licensing for MP3 data. For more information check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ogg_Vorbis.
Q: How can I create OGG files? How do I convert MP3 files to OGG?
A: There are several sound editing programs out there. For a low cost conversion tool Carbonated Comics likes to use Audacity. Audacity can be used to record voice overs, convert MP3 files to OGG, and splice audio, which is perfect for creating CCX files. For more information on Audacity, visit http://audacity.sourceforge.net/.
Q: How much do you sell comics for? What is your price point?
A: Carbonated Comics offers a flexible pricing model that is entirely controlled by the publisher or content owner. While the $0.99 cent price point is a popular goal in the industry, we realize that this might not be a good fit for many publishers. We always allow you (the publisher) to set the price on your work at whatever price you feel is appropriate.
Q: So what is my cut of the sales?
A: Carbonated Comics is currently running a special for new publishers! Publishers will receive 100% of the NET of their sales until both of the following conditions:
100% royalty for the first 300 comics sold, and:
100% royalty for all comics sold in the first 3 months after registration
The net of sales excludes the costs incurred by our payment vendors, PayPal,
LLC and Amazon Web Services, LLC. The fees for Amazon Web Services range from
1.5% - 5.0% + $0.01 to $0.30 each transaction as per http://aws.amazon.com/fps/faqs/#c5.
The fees for PayPal are generally 2.9% + $0.30 each transaction as per
https://www.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_wp-standard-pricing-outside.
The 100% royalty rate of the net sales is a limited time offer and
is valid for the first three hundred (300) sales by you as a publisher, or the
first three (3) months that you are registered with Carbonated Comics,
whichever occurs last. For example, the
offer is good for 6 months if it takes 6 months to reach your 300 sales mark;
likewise, the offer is good for 1000 sales if 1000 comics are sold in the first
3 months.
Following our current publisher special, Carbonated Comics offers an extremely competitive
‘NO NONSENSE’ compensation model. Our base split is a 50-50 split of GROSS sales,
with NO HIDDEN COSTS. Carbonated Comics covers credit card processing fees. If
you sell a comic for $1.00, then you will receive a check for $0.50. Carbonated
Comics absorbs 100% of the cost of business including bandwidth, storage and
credit card processing fees. We believe that creators and publishers should be
rewarded for their talent and effort. Our commission based model allows
Carbonated Comics to absorb the cost of doing business, while allowing content
owners to take the “lion’s share” of profits. Additionally, we are willing to
work with publishers on a tiered royalty percentage. For more information on
our tiers, contact support@carbonatedcomics.com.
